Glijun Spring and Virje Waterfall

In the immediate vicinity of Bovec you will find the source of a cold karst creek named Gljun. Its waters come from the high Kanin mountain range and come to the surface in an interesting spring. After larger rainfalls the water literally bursts from beneath the moss-covered rocks, while in the summertime the bigger attraction is a wonderful Virje waterfall a little further downstream. Its emerald green pool just calls for a refreshing dip in the hot summer days.

Starting point:
From the center of Bovec drive up towards the church or 'Kaninska vas'. Continue along the asphalt road to the village of Plužna. Ask the locals where you can leave your car, since there aren't many parking spots. It may be better to come from Bovec by bike or even on foot.

Description:
At the partisan memorial in the village of Plužna take the road up (towards north). Simply follow the main road that turns left (towards west). In about 500 meters you'll reach a marked crossroad:

  • the path to the left takes you downhill to Virje waterfall in just five minutes.
  • to reach the spring of Gljun creek continue straight ahead. Cross the little bridge and turn right until you reach a water channel and a water gate. Walk along the channel, the spring is just above it. Average water temperature throughout the year is just 5,5 degrees Celsius.

The water level in the Gljun creek varies tremendously through the year. In autumns rainy days and when the snow from Kanin mountain range melts the power of water is quite intimidating. In summer the water level is much lower, unveiling the photogenic rocks and the green pool of Virje waterfall. A nice hike, suitable for everyone.
